Hawaii Pilot Beach Restoration Project
Details:
Location: Oahu and Maui, Hawai’i
Client: State of Hawaii, Department of Lands and Natural Resources
Tasks: Site Evaluation, Planning and Preliminary Engineering Design
Description:
In a joint-venture study in 1998, Olsen Associates Inc. and Sea Engineering Inc. evaluated a dozen potential sites identified by Hawaii DLNR for potential beach improvements. The team ultimately identified three sites as candidates for a pilot beach restoration project. These included Sacred Falls & Ka’a’awa (Oahu) and Honokowai Beach Park (Maui). This study was the first to identify Sacred Falls as a potential public beach improvement site. The study additionally discussed the potential for beach improvements at all of the sites presented by DLNR. For the preferred sites, the study developed conceptual-level plans and budget estimates for the beach improvements, described potential sand sources, and outlined those specific tasks required to proceed with project development and implementation.
